The Gresham’s Law of Social Couples Dancing Today

Freestyle1 406x496

Gresham’s law is an economic principle that is commonly stated as: “Bad money drives out good”. But this principle has much broader applicability. For example, to social couples dancing.

Human beings have a long history of dancing in some form, be it as individuals, couples, or groups. The first couples dance Wilddancer recognizes that is still being taught and done today in most western countries is the Mazurka, which started in the 1500’s. The first Waltz (the Volta) dates back to 1556, with many variations since then. The Ländler arrived in the Austrian countryside about 1690, then moved to Vienna and a variation became the Viennese Waltz. After these came (in historical order) the couples dances Bolero, Paso Doble, Polka, Merengue, Habanara and Milonga (now Tango), Foxtrot, Rumba, Samba, Lindy Hop (later called Jitterbug), Cha Cha, Mambo, East Coast Swing, Jive, West Coast Swing, Texas Two-Step, Hustle, and Nightclub Two Step.

People who have danced for many years will tell you that the Twist killed touch dancing. If so, the “Freestyle” that people have done for the last few decades (essentially waving your butt while shifting your feet a bit) has danced on its grave. Its two main virtues are that it does not take any training and it doesn’t take much space on a dance floor (assuming that the dancers are not too drunk). But it really isn’t a guy-gal couples dance, as one sees a lot of gal-gal couples (either the guys are in short supply or have two left feet). But the net result is that the unskilled dancers are monopolizing the dance floor and displacing the skilled ones, ergo Gresham’s Law of Social Couples Dancing.

Even worse, according to an essay entitled Dancing Properly by noted British philosopher Roger Scruton, Freestyle removes the sociability of the physical contact, and perpetuates the bad manners so rampant in current times.

(Almost) Any Dancing is Better than None

Do the Swim and Line Dancing 421x432
Dancing in some form is nearly as old as the human race. And social couples dancing is only part of the whole spectrum of dancing, with close neighbors that include group dancing and individual dancing. You won’t find an entry in Wikipedia for the Elvira line dance or the Swim individual dance, even though a lot more people (well, maybe a lot more Americans at least) likely did (and in the case of the Elvira still do) these than ever did the Viennese waltz. Inexplicably, Wikipedia DOES have the Stroll, the Pony, and some other of these generally easy-to-do party dances.

Top Ten Car Tunes for Social Dancing

car tunes composite 600x450Some of the best songs written about cars are among the best ones for dancing, too. Wilddancer often gets asked by dancers (who’ve had some lessons, so they know the difference between an east coast and a west coast swing, for example) to recommend songs for bands or DJs to play for dancing. Here is our personal list, which fortunately includes seven different dance steps:
1. Cuda Janet (Plymouth Barracuda) by Wild Bill Coggshall (2014) – West Coast Swing
2. Pink Cadillac (Cadillac) by Bruce Springsteen (1984) – Hustle
3. Little GTO (Pontiac GTO) by Ronny and the Daytonas (1964) – East Coast Swing
4. One Piece at a Time (Cadillac) by Johnny Cash (1976) – Country 2-Step
5. Hot Rod Lincoln (Lincoln) by Commander Cody et al (1972) – 10-Step (this is a kind of polka that’s simple but fast; you can see it on YouTube
6. Mustang Sally (Ford Mustang) by Wilson Pickett (1966) – West Coast Swing
7. Little Deuce Coupe (1932 Ford) by Beach Boys (1963) – East Coast Swing
8. Little Red Corvette (Chevrolet Corvette) by Prince (1983) – Cha Cha
9. Jaguar and Thunderbird (Jaguar & Ford Thunderbird) by Chuck Berry – Country 2-Step
10. In My Merry Oldsmobile (Oldsmobile) by Bing Crosby – Viennese Waltz

Sunday in the Park with … Lindy

Social dancing is where you find it. In our persona as Wilddancers we have danced in large public squares and parks in China (as the only Caucasians present–and with the background of a bunch of dance lessons–we naturally drew a crowd, all of whom wanted to dance with each of us). And this outdoor dancing happens in the U.S. as well … especially in places like San Francisco where the weather is usually good. (A little chilly sometimes, but when you’re doing the fast-tempo version of swing called Lindy Hop you get warmed up pretty fast.) Not only is it free, but from a small group with a boombox nearly 20 years ago it has expanded to a group as large as 200 on some Sundays, complete with instructors. This all takes place Sundays from 11am to 2pm on the sidewalk behind the de Young museum in Golden Gate Park.

Disco Dancers Stayin' Alive 226x223

Dancing is a great way to stay physically and mentally fit, especially when your day job is on the downswing. Bond trading guru and co-founder of the giant PIMCO recently parted company, which—perhaps along with a couple of drinks–gave him the impetus to overcome his inhibitions and lack of recent practice to take to the dance floor. (For those who don’t recall, Stayin’ Alive was the theme song to both the popular Staying Alive movie and its even more popular predecessor about the hustle dance, Saturday Night Fever.)

Fusion Dance Mixes Ballroom with Other Dance Forms

Fans of ballet know what partnering means in ballet, which normally does not resemble social couples dancing. But now FJK Dance, the brainchild of Fadi J. Khoury, the Baghdad-born son of an Iraqi ballet director, is mixing ballet with ballroom, Middle Eastern, and jazz dance, including presenting “Tango Unframed” as part of a program at New York Live Arts on July 23 and 24, according to The New York Times.

Will Breakdance Replace Classic Ballet?

Red Bull Flying Bach

The spectators were drinking Red Bull instead champagne and the performers were wearing electic casual clothes not tutus and tights, but the dancing was incredible on June 20 at Chicago’s Opera House, on the opening night of the 2014 World Tour of the Flying Bach troupe. While there have for many years been interesting crossover music and dance combinations (jazz choral groups singing baroque songs come to mind), pairing the piano and harpsichord of Bach’s Well-Tempered Claviar with breakdancing (usually done to rap or Hip-Hop music) is a real stretch. Especially because the dancers, who usually have a straightforward beat to follow, now had to each follow a separate melody line of a fugue. And we wonder how much impact such performances will have on classic ballet. Ballet is more about women than men, but breakdancing is more of a male activity because of its demands on upper body strength. And to further add to the contrast, the 2014 schedule snubs New York and includes only Chicago for its 6 U.S. performances, but has 10 performances in Chile, 8 in Canada, 3 in Belgium, and 1 each in Azerbaijan and Qatar.

Mountain Winery Names Featured Beverage Wilddancer

Country Roadhouse Wilddancer Whiskey Sour cropped 488x642

From the Saratoga, CA-based Mountain Winery you can see the whole South Bay. We couldn’t resist attending their April 18 Country Roadhouse event, because it featured a proven country-western band called WANTED) But when marketing director Katelyn Studebaker found out what Wilddancer does, she immediately named their featured whiskey sour after us. And she had the dance floor well set up, with a lane around the outside for the dances that moved (mostly two-step and cowboy cha cha on April 18) and the center for swing and other dances that don’t move.

Chinese Youngsters Complain Oldsters’ Dance Music is too Loud!

China Park Dancing 1 598x429
Chinese people love social couples dancing. They do it, along with numerous other fitness activities (tai chi, karate, hacky sack (yup!), …), in parks, usually early in the morning. Wilddancer has joined them in Shanghai and Beijing. We deemed ourselves too young to particpate in the “Seniles Disco” in Shanghai (lost in translation), but joined a group who had music that matched what we often danced to. And we had to dance with everyone in the group, essentially none of whom had ever taken lessons in western-style ballroom or latin dances. In Beijing it was on National Day, and our west coast swing made all our new friends watch (and applaud).

Real Men Dance: New Cuban Fury Movie

Cuban Fury Trailer 3

Social couples dancing smacks of romance. What better day than Valentine’s Day to release a movie that could significantly boost interest in salsa. Salsa combines hot moves (hey, it originated in Latin America) with plenty of exercise, and is already the latest worldwide social couples dance craze. A British movie specifically timed for release today might be the next big dance movie hit. It’s a comedy, but shows that anybody can learn to dance. And there’s romance, so the learner is rewarded for his efforts. YouTube is full of trailers. Have a look .
